App passwords

An app password is a separate password for one device or application, e.g. the mail app on your phone or Thunderbird on your laptop. It only works for the services you choose (e.g. email) and does not replace your normal login. You manage app passwords in your mail account settings at https://console.moregeek-it.eu (if your company has its own mail system: https://mail.<your domain>).

We recommend an app password for every application instead of your normal mailbox password.

Why an app password and not my normal password?
App password Your main mail password
Stored on the device only a device-specific key your main password
Device lost or stolen delete the app password, done. Nothing else changes you must change your main password, and all your other devices and apps must be set up again
What it can be used for limited to the services you pick (e.g. only IMAP + SMTP), cannot be used to log in to the webmail or settings everything, including webmail and account settings
You change your main password the device keeps working the device stops working until you update it
Overview you can see which device uses which password no way to tell devices apart

Create an app password

  1. Open your mail account settings https://console.moregeek-it.eu (best on a computer) and sign in as usual.
  2. Open the App passwords tab.
  3. Click Create app password.
  4. Enter a name that tells you which device it is for and when you created it, e.g. Fairphone – Mail – 2026-10-26 or Laptop – Thunderbird – 2026-10-26. The mail system doesn't show when an app password was created, so the date in the name helps you later to spot old passwords you no longer need.
  5. Under Protocols, all options are selected at first. Deselect everything the application doesn't need. For an email app, keep only IMAP and SMTP (i.e. remove EAS/ActiveSync, CardDAV/CalDAV, POP3 and Sieve). An app password that can do less is worth less to anyone who gets hold of it.
  6. Copy the password and keep the window open until the device is set up.

In the application that needs the credentials, use:

  • Username: your full email address <email>
  • Password: the app password

Note

You will not be able to see the password again later. If you lose it, simply create a new one and delete the old one.

Delete an app password

When a device is lost, sold or replaced, or you no longer use an app:

  1. Sign in to your mail account settings https://console.moregeek-it.eu.
  2. Open the App passwords tab.
  3. Delete the app password of that device.

The device or application can no longer sign in with it. Your other devices keep working.

Alternative: your mailbox password

You can also use your normal mailbox password in an application (username: your full email address <email>). This works, but has the drawbacks listed above. In particular, your main password is stored on the device, and a lost device means changing your password everywhere. Only use this if you can't create an app password.

Device lost or stolen and you used your mailbox password?

Change your mailbox password immediately, update it on all your other devices, and tell us, so we can check for anything unusual.
