Thunderbird (computer)

These guides explain how to set up Thunderbird on your computer (Windows, macOS or Linux) for your email, calendar and contacts.

They are written for Thunderbird ESR (Extended Support Release), the version with a yearly feature update and security fixes in between. The current one is Thunderbird 153 ESR. Menu names can differ slightly in other versions.

Before you start

  • Have your email address and your usual login ready (the one you use for webmail and the Nextcloud web interface).
  • Thunderbird does not support signing in through the browser for your mailbox or Nextcloud. Instead, you create two app passwords, one for email and one for calendar and contacts. The guides show you how.

Computer lost, sold or replaced? Revoking access

Each app password works only for this one Thunderbird. To lock it out without affecting your other devices:

  • Email: delete the app password of this computer, see App passwords.
  • Calendar and contacts: sign in to https://<cloud-address>, click your profile picture → Settings → Security, and under Devices & sessions click ⋯ → Revoke next to this computer's entry.

Lost or stolen?

Please also tell us if a computer is lost or stolen, so we can check for anything unusual.
