Email in Thunderbird¶
Step 1: Create an app password for email¶
Create an app password for this computer, e.g. named Laptop – Thunderbird – 2026-10-26 (with today's date), as described in App passwords. Keep it at hand for step 2.
You can also use your normal mailbox password instead, but this is less safe – see why.
Step 2: Add the account in Thunderbird¶
- Start Thunderbird. On first start, the account setup opens by itself. Otherwise open the menu ☰ → New Account → Email.
- Enter:
- Your full name, e.g. Jane Doe. Recipients see this name.
- Email address:
<email> - Password: the app password from step 1
- Click Continue. Thunderbird looks up the settings.
-
Compare what Thunderbird found with the settings below. If they don't match, or nothing was found, choose Configure manually (wording may vary) and enter them yourself.
Incoming mail (IMAP)
Setting Value Protocol IMAP Server <mail-server>Port 993 Connection security SSL/TLS Authentication method Normal password Username your full email address <email>Outgoing mail (SMTP)
Setting Value Server <mail-server>Port 465 Connection security SSL/TLS Authentication method Normal password Username your full email address <email> -
Click Done (in the manual configuration, click Re-test first). Thunderbird checks the connection and downloads your folders.
- Send yourself a test email.
Calendar and contacts
Thunderbird won't find your calendars and address books during the email setup – they are in Nextcloud and are set up separately, see Calendar and contacts. If Thunderbird still offers calendars or address books here, skip them.
Tip
- The username is always the full email address, not just the part before the @.
- If your network blocks port 465, use STARTTLS on port 587 instead.
